Shoes

These are my shoes. I love shoes. Yesterday Mom, James and I were out getting haircuts (not James) and running errands when some one commented about my shoes. They were my brown basket weave wedges and I believe the comment was to the effect of "I love your shoes, but I could never wear them". This led us into a conversation about how I've always loved shoes. Mom recalled how even when I was a toddler tagging along at garage sales she never worried about me, whenever she couldn't find me she would find the shoes and there I would be playing in the middle of the mass of footwear.
This past week I bought a pair of Asics tennishoes. Its probbably been five years since I've owned a pair of tennies. If I couldn't wear a heal or Docs I wore my flip-flops. When I went jogging I borrowed Kryna's Asics. But in the last few months it was becomming all too clear to me that it was time to add a pair of truely sensible shoes to my collection. I wore them today for the first time and I LOVE them. They are sooooo comfy. Who knew?
I rarely throw out a pair of shoes, I may give them away, but to throw them out just seems too cruel. Who knows I may need them again. If not me surely some one.
The oldest ones here are pobably the black heals in the back row, they are eight years old, the Docs and boots are a close second with the strappy silver heals nipping at their toes. The rest is just history.
My favorite shoes.
Aren't they pretty?
Ah yes and these are my favorite comfy shoes. My mukluks, Asics, and flip-flops. You can't beat Old Navy flip-flops...$2.50 and they last forever. They are all my poor, little, swollen, pregnant feet saw this summer.

Cute shoes~ Hehe, reminds me of...ME! I remember the docs, and those black boots, didn't we all call them your "witch boots" ?

I too am a shoe person. Feet are a terrible thing to waste because I don't want to spend my last years in a wheel chair if I can help it. I've had enough fun in such a device for one year if not a lifetime. I keep a pair of runners, a pair of Docs and a pair of slimmer brown shoes for jeans and other casual pants, a pair of black and brown dress shoes, some work boots, and some house shoes and Uggs. Function and form in equal proportions. If I had a blog (conditional contrary to fact), I'd write a post about the types of bodies that ought not to wear high-heels and how to walk in them if you do have the right build. No I've not tried it but take it from the farrier. adr

Love the post! You do have the best shoe taste. They always look good with what you wear. Please help me!

I have a pair of Asics, Doc boots, and a couple of others but that is all I wear. I want to wear cute shoes. I bought a pair of cute heals the other day and can't bring myself to wear them.

What do you say Aaron about the shoe thing? Since you don't have a blog, you might as well post it right here, right now, since we are on the subject. I am all ears.

I used to forbid Lydia from wearing $2 Old Navy flip-flops. I even bought her some nice new Birkenstocks to keep her from wearing them.

Last summer she bought me a pair- I wore them SO much... and that from a man that has at least 9 pair of Birkenstocks!

It's not my usual practice to highjack blogs, but here's my own opinion about shoes with significant heels. Those with a proportionately large derrière, bust, or body in general do well to avoid pumps, stilettos, tall wedges, etc. Here's why. Raising the heel changes the posture by arching the spine backwards. This kicks the butt and the bosoms (as Net would say) out. Ideal if you don't have so much in one or both areas. Not so good if you're already well-endowed in those places. A large body can work on heels but almost always just looks precarious and should be avoided. As for those who are conformed for heels, they only look well if used/worked properly. Their function is not just to look cool or add height--they change gait, but that can be helped or hindered by the way one walks in them. The easiest way to think about it is this: Keep your chin and eyes up and roll your shoulders back and slightly down. Then, as you walk, walk like you have someplace to go and just reach for the ground with your toes a bit. And this next tip I should charge for, but here it pro bono. :) Don't be afraid to rope-walk (one foot in front of the other) a little more than you usually do. All humans do this so they can keep their weight over their foot while the other is suspended, but heels require this a little more because they're less stable. It feels slightly unnatural at first because this drops the hip a little more dramatically than you're used to. But this is what makes heels so darn classy and poised. It's not just the height--it's the gait. And the whole enterprise spells white trash if you're not built for it or don't pull it off with care. Again, all in humble opinion of this farrier whose Ciceronian oration needs desperately to be tended to. adr

Ahh..you've made up for your lack of comments. :) You are welcome to hijack my blog any time you feel the need. We always joke about my "model" walk when I am wearing heals. There's something to it.

Oh, how I wish I could wear heels! I refuse to because 5'10 is tall enough for me. I don't need the extra height. But, all of the cute shoes have HEELS. Oh well. I'll stick with nerdy Birkenstocks and flipflops. ;0)

Very nice collection! (And, I wanted to ask, what brand is that sling that you purchased? Looks like a Hotsling, but there are a lot of copies of that out there....)

How much time have you spent in heels? It seems as though you have quite a bit of experience! :)

Nate: Heels are one of those many things in life that you can talk about without experience. Although to talk about gait without any experience with heels or body mechanics or anything like that might be a little presumtuous.

Kryn: You could look stunning in heels. Honestly. You just have to get over your little phobia about certain things (hmmm?) and practice a bit. To start out, shorten your stride by a few inches and just walk around. Your hips and shoulders should move up and down more than side to side (obviously you can't move your hip vertically without some lateral movement but it helps to think of up and down). This keeps your center of gravity in your torso relatively constant. Control center of gravity shift as you walk with the hip not the shoulder (mostly). It's the side to side movement (especially in the shoulder) that tips people off to inexperience and (perish the thought) white trashiness. adr

Lanette, your shoes are awesome!!!

I LOVE heels, but boy are they a pain. I noticed that gait thing you mentioned years ago... and Aaron's right. I realized the reason I hated how I looked in 'em was because I walked them wrong. Pretend you're tip toeing through broken glass.

So now I love to wear them, but usually only on Sundays when there are lots of people to carry George around (when he's in the mood). It's impossible to look graceful while trailing after a crawling infant.

And YaY! I married someone who's still taller than me no matter how high the heels get!

Shorten my stride?!? Have you noticed how Bert leaves the door running? :)

Kryna,
Well yes he is running, you have to when you are on Pohl time.

Wow. I have a big butt....Oh wise Aaron, does this mean I can never wear heels again?

Nette,
Yesterday was entirely too much fun! I'm sorry I was so boring...But next time (when I am down here for a better reason) we will rock the state of Arkansas!

Lydia, Yes it is a Hotsling. I haven't actually used it outside of the house yet but I am really excited to. I saw one time on your blog that you have a sling too. What kind is yours and do you like it?

Who knew that you could have such a strong conversation about shoes? Seriously, I loved reading all of these comments! I might be guilty of passing along the blog address to some friends for the entertainment value of the posted conversation.

Aric and shoes? I must admit, I have far too many in my closet. But I don't necessarily go for quality or for style, but rather for saving the old mighty dollar. I have numerous shoes in my closet that I am convinced no other buyer wanted. Thus, their reduced sale price caused my hand to embrace these misfit shoes. My latest example of this...I just bought a pair of canvas camouflage shoes from the Gap. Did I love them? No, I would say I was impartial at best. Did I need them? This answer is a clear no. But I bought them because no one else did and they were price slashed to $3.50. They were cheap, they cover my feet, and I created a home for the lonely shoes.

On a side note, does anyone remember the cousin’s trip sexy feet contest? Gosh, I hate winning everything all of the time, but my feet are a thing of wonder! :)

Great post!
Aric

Aric, How funny, I too am a freak for a sale. All but I think three of the shoes in the pic were on sale. I'm a sucker for all sales though. Is it a strength, weakness, or just a sickness? And while you have very nice feet I'm still not convinced that you won the "Sexy Feet" contest.
